IDES 085 F Kitchen and Bath Design 2 Units
Prerequisite(s): IDES 110 F with a grade of C or better
18 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This course covers functional planning for the kitchen and bath. The emphasis is on layout, materials, appliances and fixtures, lighting and electrical planning, design character, construction and plumbing. This course also covers trends and career options. IDES 100 F Fundamentals of Interior Design 3 Units
54 hours lecture per term. This course covers the application of design principles and elements in planning interior environments that meet the needs and desires of the occupant while addressing functionality and sustainability. The design process is emphasized encompassing user requirements, design concept, basic space planning, furniture arrangement, color theory, and coordination of fabrics and surfaces. IDES 105 F Interior Design Studio I 2 Units
Corequisite(s): IDES 110 F with a grade of C or better
Advisory: IDES 100 F
18 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This studio course is designed to apply concepts and theories presented in the lecture course. Fundamentals of Interior Design IDES 100 F. Emphasis is placed on the design process in developing solutions for interior design projects. Special attention is given to Design Principles and Elements; the application of color; floor plan development; and the selection of materials and finishes. IDES 110 F Drafting for Interior Design (formerly Drafting - Interior Design) 3 Units
36 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This course covers the development of drafting techniques and graphic skills for application in architectural working drawings, including floor plans, lighting and electrical plans, elevations, sections, construction details, and orthographic projection, utilizing manual drawing and 2D/3D modeling software. IDES 130 F Applied Color and Design Theory 3 Units
36 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This course examines color and design theory and its application in developing solutions to interior design projects. IDES 147 F Office Planning 3 Units
Prerequisite(s): IDES 110 F or ARCH 100 F with a grade of C or better
36 hours lecture, 54 hours lab per term. This course will cover large and small office planning including client improvement practices and the use of modular systems. Also covered are code requirements and the use of electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems. (CSU) (Degree Credit)
IDES 150 F Interior Materials and Products 4 Units
72 hours lecture per term. This course explores selection criteria, application and evaluation of products and materials used in commercial and residential interior design. Included are textiles, furnishings, finishes, sustainability standards and the LEED system. Field trips to manufacturers and vendors are an integral part of this course. (Degree Credit) (CSU)
IDES 170 F Space Planning I 3 Units
Prerequisite(s): ARCH 124 F or IDES 110 F, and IDES 105 F, with a grade of C or better
36 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This course examines the process of allocating interior space for furniture, fixtures and equipment, providing appropriate circulation, traffic patterns and room flow that function to contribute to optimum quality of life for the occupants. Emphasis is on residential space planning, including whole-house layout, remodeling, kitchen and bath design, plumbing considerations and accessibility. (Degree Credit) (CSU)
IDES 175 F Space Planning II 3 Units
Advisory: IDES 170 F and IDES 225 F
36 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This course builds on the space planning methods introduced in IDES 170 F and focuses on design development for non-residential interiors, including hospitality, health care, retail, and office systems. Building code requirements are explored as they pertain to the various building systems and Universal design. Tenant improvement practices are examined. (Degree Credit) (CSU)
IDES 180 F History of Architecture and Furnishings I (formerly History of Architecture I) 3 Units
54 hours lecture per term. This course covers the historical relationship between furnishings, architecture and the decorative arts in this overview of design heritage from antiquity through the 19th century in Europe. IDES 200 F 3D Rendering Basics 2 Units
Advisory: ARCH 124 F or IDES 110 F
18 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This course covers the application of the methods, techniques, and tools used for illustrating interior spaces and furnishings via orthographic projection. One-point and two-point perspective renderings will be produced by hand and with CAD rendering software. (Degree Credit) (CSU)
IDES 210 F Fundamentals of Lighting 3 Units
Advisory: ARCH 124 F or IDES 110 F
54 hours lecture per term. This course covers the history and vocabulary of lighting; the physiological and psychological effects of various types of lighting; effects of lighting on color; industry codes and standards; automation in lighting; energy efficiency; environmental impact; safety; and electrical considerations. Students will complete a lighting plan layout including a schedule, product sourcing and specifications. (Degree Credit) (CSU)
IDES 215 F Interior Design Studio II 2 Units
Advisory: IDES 210 F
18 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This course is taken when the student is nearing the end of their studies. It allows the student to pursue individual interior design projects with supervision and the use of the Interior Design laboratory resources. Universal design, sustainability, space planning, interior components, lighting systems, architectural elements and specification writing will be integrated into research projects emphasizing a problem solving approach. IDES 220 F Building Codes, Construction Basics and Systems 3 Units
Advisory: IDES 105 F and IDES 110 F
54 hours lecture per term. This course covers building codes; regulations; standards and specifications concerning life-safety issues as they relate to both residential and commercial interior design projects. Building construction basics and systems for fire protection, plumbing, mechanical and electrical are examined, along with occupancy types, means of egress, universal design and sustainability as they pertain to the built environment. Special attention is given to CALGreen Code and California Title 24 energy efficiency standards. The role of building officials and building departments are explored. IDES 225 F Advanced 3D Modeling and Rendering 2 Units
Advisory: IDES 110 F and IDES 200 F
18 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This course expands on the methods learned in IDES 200 F for rendering advanced, complex photorealistic interiors. 3D modeling will be utilized and integrated with various other rendering software for optimum visual enhancement of presentation drawings. IDES 230 F Business and Professional Practice 3 Units
54 hours lecture per term. This course covers the business and professional management of an interior design practice including legal requirements, project management and business practices. Field trips may be required outside of regularly-scheduled class time. (Degree Credit) (CSU)
IDES 240 F Interior Design Internship 2-4 Units
18 hours lecture and 54-162 hours of supervised employment, paid or unpaid internship per term. This course allows students to earn credit through supervised employment in an interior design establishment. The class meets weekly with the instructor. This course should be taken when students are nearing completion of the Interior Design certificate or degree. This course may be taken up to four times. (Degree Credit) (CSU)
IDES 260 F Digit Imag Enhance & Port Dev 2 Units
Advisory: IDES 225 F
18 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This course allows the student to expand the skills learned in IDES 225 F, and to explore new CAD platforms for communicating design concepts. Techniques in visualization are examined and combined with digital rendering for enhancement of portfolio presentations. (Degree Credit) (CSU)
IDES 265 F Interior Design Studio III 2 Units
Prerequisite(s): IDES 170 F and IDES 215 F with a grade of C or better

18 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This course explores design solutions for total interior space planning of commercial environments. This is achieved through programming, development of working drawings, codes application, lighting and electrical analysis, and the research of materials, fixtures, furniture, and equipment. IDES 275 F Interior Design Studio IV 2 Units
Prerequisite(s): IDES 265 F with a grade of C or better
18 hours lecture and 54 hours lab per term. This course focuses on the application of the interior design process for complete custom residential spaces. A comprehensive design approach will be utilized that includes programming, lighting and electrical plans, selection of surfaces, materials, fixtures, furnishings, equipment, and custom cabinetry.
