This Psychiatric Technology Certificate aims to prepare a student to meet the requirements for licensure as a Psychiatric Technician in the state of California. A Psychiatric Technician is a licensed member of the professional healthcare team who works with people diagnosed with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and psychiatric disorders. Psychiatric Technicians are employed by private and state psychiatric hospitals and group homes. Psychiatric Technicians increasingly find a variety of jobs in the fields of corrections and human services. These include substance abuse programs, forensic facilities, special education and many other areas promoting intellectual, developmental disabilities and mental health. The program is accredited by and conforms to the regulations of the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the State Board Licensure Examination. To earn a certificate, the student must complete the required courses with a grade of C or better. At least 50% of all course work must be completed at Cypress College. Upon completion of the required course work, the student becomes eligible to apply to the BVNPT for a licensure examination. This certificate requires a total of 55.5 units.

Program Student Learning Outcomes:

OUTCOME 1: Acquire the workforce preparation skills including basic nursing care, participation in treatment plan development/evaluation, administration of care, medication administration, psychosocial assessment/interventions, behavior management and legal/professional responsibilities necessary to become a safe and competent practitioner in the field of psychiatric technology.
